Nose correction

There might be hardly any other organ of the body that has attracted the interest of the plastic-aesthetic surgery as much as the nose has. It is situated at a prominent and central position in the face and thus it is responsible for the characteristic features of a person; it shows distinctive marks according to the race, due to its position it is often subject to accidents, and it goes through basic changes in the course of life. The nose correction was one of the first operations that was carried out in the history of aesthetic surgery. Today it is undoubtedly one of the most frequent operations of all.

It has to be the aim of an operation to build a natural form that is in harmony with the surrounding structures of the face. An improvement of nose breathing must be achieved, in no way must the function of the nose be impaired after the operation. Nevertheless there are some things that won't work perfectly immediately after the operation.

The nose consists of an upper immovable part with the nasal bone and several cartilage structures, and a lower movable part with the so called "alinasal cartilages" that give the tip of the nose and the nostrils their form.

The "classical" nose operation is carried out in the following way:

  1. New forming, accentuation, and lifting of the tip of the nose
  2. Clearing away of a possible nose bump or filling up of the nose bridge in case of a saddle to create a new profile line
  3. Narrowing of the nose pyramid
  4. Straightening of the nasal septum as a function operation

The following deviations of the nose forms can be corrected by an operation: Hump nose - broad nose - saddle nose - congenital or acquired malformations of the tip and the alar wings of the nose, and many more

Procedure:
There will be no visible scars as the operation will be carried out via the interior of the nose, i.e. via the nostrils. Only in rare cases will there be an "open" operation. It is preferred to do the operation under general anaesthesia but smaller corrections can of course also be carried out under local anaesthesia.

In principle, out-patient procedures are possible, of course in some cases also a clinic stay of up to 3 days. After the operation the nose will be provided with a plastic splint that will remain there for 10 - 14 days, a nose tamponade will be removed after 1 - 2 days.

This chapter about aesthetic nose surgery would not be complete if we didn't mention briefly the possibilities of a profile plastic surgery.

This refers to concomitant corrections at other parts of the face to achieve a further harmonization of the facial traits that might not be possible through a nose correction alone. In many cases also chin corrections are appropiate in addition to the nose correction, but also operations on the upper lip in relation to the nose, or corrections of the upper jaw, the cheek or the forehead.
